A report has also surfaced online which suggests that content from Disney+, which is a newly launched streaming service by Disney, will be available in India via HotStar. It is worth noticing that Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox last month, the company has become the official owner of HotStar. According to the subscription packages page on the service’s official website, the consumers will now have to pay Rs 299 for HotStar Premium monthly subscription package. However, the annual plan is still listed at Rs 999. Both the plans of HotStar Premium get users access to American TV shows, Hollywood movies, live sports, latest episodes of Indian TV shows, HotStar specials and Indian movies.
If you are one among those who only like to watch Indian content and are not interested in American TV shows or Hollywood films, you can go for the Hotstar VIP plan, that was announced by the company last month. For the HotStar VIP plan, you only have to pay Rs 365 per annum. As of now, there is no word on whether the revised pricing is only applicable to the new subscriber or whether existing subscribers would have to pay the same amount when their next cycle begins. We should also add that the report which claims that Disney+ content will be available in India via HotStar first published in Mint. It is worth noticing that this content is not available as of now, as the service will go live in the United States in November this year. According to the report, Disney+ will not be launched as a separate platform in India. But it is worth pointing out that at the launch of Disney+, the company had said that the video-streaming service will be available in the Asia Pacific throughout 2020 and 2021. However, Disney did not mention India specifically. Coming back to the report, it has also been said that HotStar will be localising the Disney+ content for India by dubbing and adding subtitles of various languages. Although some reports are connecting the rise of pricing in HotStar Premium’s monthly plan to the reported inclusion of Disney+ content on its platform, we feel that there are still months left for the launch of the service, so it can also be unrelated to it.
